Top 5 Moments of 2012

What a year 2012 was for Runner Nation and us here at Inside Runner Sports. Over the past year we saw the Roadrunners have their ups and downs, but ultimately continue to rise and make their mark on the world of college basketball and football.

Therefore, to close out the year, we offer up our top five moments of the year.

#5. Champions

November 11, 2012 – With some of the strongest play – especially on the defensive rebounds – the Roadrunners pulled away for a 79-70 victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs and be crowned champions of the Liberty Tax Classic season opening tourney in Norfolk, Virginia. The Roadrunners stumbled out of the gates with a 71-59 loss to Morgan State but came back with 60-56 win over Holy Cross before matching up against the host team, Old Dominion. In the tourney, UTSA fans saw Michael Hale continue to breakout as a leader for the Roadrunners as they play their first season in the WAC.

#4. 100 Wins

December 21, 2012 – After struggling through a rough skid of losses on one of the toughest road trips the basketball team has ever seen, the Roadrunners settled back into familiar territory as they traveled to Corpus Christi to take on their former Southland Conference foe, the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Islanders. While the win got the Runners back on the winning track, it was Head Coach, Brooks Thompson, who had the stat of the night. With the win, Brooks Thompson marked his 100th in his seven year tenure as head basketball coach for UTSA. It's another mark on Thompson's resume that has helped turn around a UTSA's basketball program that under his watch has seen a Southland Conference Championship, NCAA tournament appearance and first round win.

#3. FBS WIN

September 29, 2012 – It was a sun filled day, before a nice evening backdrop began to set on Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Roadrunners would take the field to start WAC play against New Mexico State and after a total of 4 touchdowns by Eric Soza, would make history on two counts. The Runners netted the programs first ever win against an FBS established team and it's first ever WAC victory. UTSA would get up 28-7 in the 3rd quarter and finish with a 35-14 win. Soza would throw for at the time a program record of 269 yards, along with 3 touchdowns. It was the teams fifth straight victory to move to 5-0 on the season.

#2. Rivalry Win

November 24, 2012 – UTSA and Texas State had been seen as rivals for some time with the contrived "I-35 Rivalry" between their athletic programs, but football – as UTSA had not fielded a football team until 2011. So, when both teams joined the WAC for the 2012 season, everyone circled the game for the November showdown between the two programs: one the established, the other young and brash. By the end of the day it was orange-clad Roadrunners that ran away with a stunning 38-31 win over the Bobcats. The win would leave the Bobcats having to lick their wounds for several years for a possible rematch.

#1. WAC to CUSA

May 4, 2012 – In 2011 UTSA was proud to accept an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference helping them take the fast track to FBS status. Add to that the changing landscape of college football, and suddenly UTSA found itself in the mix to fill the voids left in Conference USA by the likes of Houston and SMU. Runner Nation was elated to hear the news that UTSA accept an offer the conference before evening playing one game in the WAC. Fans and administration found C-USA to be the best fit, with more to offer, for UTSA's athletic goals.
