Earlier this spring, Austin Karrer
of New Braunfels Canyon made our initial Alamo City Hoops Top 10 list (2014). More performances like the one on Friday at UTSA
's camp and he'll be making the climb up the rankings later this fall.
During the morning session of the camp, coaches, past and present players gave instructions on skill building, shooting, fundamentals, and ball handling. After lunch the coaching staff opened the floor up and ran a 5 on 5 tournament breaking up the campers into teams. This is where Karrer excelled.
The 6'2" SG drew some oohs and awe's with 6 dunks on the day and deadly three point shooting. He showed the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the hole to finish with either hand. All in all, his performance stood out.
"My legs were feeling good, shots were just kind of falling. The hoop just got bigger and bigger," said Karrer.
Austin led his team to the championship bracket of the 5 on 5 play and in the championship match he continued to show his skill. On consecutive possessions, he drilled a trey from straight away and then came back down the floor, dribbled behind the back to shake his defender and finish with the right hand at the rim.
At this point in the 2014 recruiting cycle, Karrer is flying under the radar. Smaller non division one schools have shown interest such as Rhodes College, Trinity (SA), and others.
Early word is that he made an impression with the UTSA staff. To add to his impressive game, the motor and drive that he showed all day long really stood out. If UTSA presses forward with his recruitment, Karrer could end up staying close to home.
"I really liked the gym," said Karrer. "The whole environment seemed really good. I really enjoyed the coaches, the players, everything was really well ran at the camp. I didn't get to see much of the campus, I got there a little late and we we're trying to find the gym. From what I did see, it seemed like a real nice campus. It's a school I would definitely look forward in going to."

Over 50 campers turned out for the UTSA Basketball "Elite" Camp on Friday at the Convocation Center. There were a few D1 prospects on hand and this Shooting Guard turned in the best performance of the day.
