InsideRunnerSports.com Reporter JJ Perez gives his thoughts on five topics.

Happy Monday RunnerNation. Here is JJ's Journal:

Head Coach Larry Coker and quarterback Eric Soza attended Conference USA Football Media Day last week with the other members of the Conference. While UTSA is a new face, their presence in the room was noticeable.

As a new member to CUSA, there will be some growing pains, but the knowledge and respect that other coaches and players already have for the Roadrunners is palpable.

Last week I chatted with every position coach on the Hard Hat Defense about expected starters, contributors, and expectations on the upcoming season. We'll be running the stories throughout the week.

The most thorough conversation I had was with Defensive Coordinator Neal Neathery. I've spoken with him many times throughout the years, but getting inside of his mind about logic and schemes was very interesting. An old fashioned football coach, the workman-like attitude of the Hard Hat D mirrors Neathery's personality.

At the end of the day Neathery's wants his defense to be remembered by being physical and playing hard. Obviously schemes and executing are always important but there's a certain toughness that Neathery is trying to install in his defense.

The month of July is one of the slowest months in the sports calendar, especially to football fans. This last week of July means that football season is upon us. NFL teams have reported to training camps, preseason games will begin soon and college programs all across the country will begin fall practices.

UTSA's fall practices will begin next week and that Labor Day weekend showdown with New Mexico will be here before you know it.

While the off-seasons have gotten shorter and shorter, nothing substitutes the pad-popping we'll get to witness in a few weeks. This upcoming 2013 season may be the most exciting in UTSA's history. Excitement amongst RunnerNation appears to be at an all-time high. In a few short weeks, things will kick off in earnest.

Just a few more days are left in our July ticket giveaway promotion. All new annual subscribers during the month of July are automatically entered into a drawing to win two free tickets to the home opener vs Oklahoma State.

These are my personal tickets to the game, located on the sideline of the lower level. Sign up for a chance to win.
