IRS Practice Report 8.8.13 w/Video

On Thursday, UTSA held its second practice in pads at Dub Farris Stadium.

InsideRunnerSports observed practice for the second time this week. Here is your practice report for 8.8.13.

There was a considerable upgrade in pace and seriousness at Thursday evening's practice compared to that of Tuesday. It was the fourth day of workouts for the squad and the second day in pads.

Running back Evans Okotcha was held out of work outs with what offensive coordinator Kevin Brown described as a minor injury. Although he did not participate in drills, Okotcha was seen aggressively working out individually on the sidelines.

Head coach Larry Coker described the pace as faster than ever before. Already installing offensive and defensive sets, Coker's staff is already beginning to get into specifics for the coming season.

The intensity on the practice field was palapable as many players spent post-practice time working out with position coaches and among themselves individually. Of note was true freshman running back Jarveon Williams, who appeared to work out post-practice to the point of near exhaustion.

UTSA is scheduled to be in full pads for Friday evening's practice.

On the heat:
"It's been the hottest week of the entire year. I think we're in pretty good shape overall. We're getting ready and are ready to work."

On standouts so far:
"Our defensive line, we've got two good drops there. I think we're going to be pretty solid there. Our secondary play is going to be better. (Eric) Soza has been really impressive. He's sharp, he's strong and he's right on the money throwing the ball. Overall, we're a much improved team from a year ago."

On installation of plays:
"It's installed right now. They're doing it now. It's the stuff we did last year. For the most part we're working on what we're going to do."

On increase of the pace:

"The pace has been increased. Our defense needs that. Now New Mexico isn't a fast pace offensive football team. But eight our opponents like to hurry up the speed, try to run a 100 plays a game. We've got to get accustom to that pace."
