Keys To Victory

Keys To Victory

Coming off one of the more exciting game weeks in program history, the ‘Runners must now put last week behind them as they take on the Wildcats. Here are the keys to victory.

Arizona's fast-paced, run-oriented offense presents a unique challenge for UTSA. As does the Wildcats' defense front, which may be the best the ‘Runners will face all season. Here are the keys to victory:

CAUSE TURNOVERS

In 2012, the UTSA Hard Hat Defense was very opportunistic when it came to forcing turnovers. In fact, many of the defenses 23 forced turnovers last season came in critical moments of the game.

So far in two games this season, UTSA has not forced any turnovers.

In order for UTSA to be successful, the ‘Runners must have a positive turnover margin, meaning they must cause more turnovers than they give up. So far in 2012, UTSA has an average of -1.5 turnover margin per game.

WIN THE TIME OF POSSESSION

Last week vs a fast-paced Oklahoma St offense, UTSA struggled to consistently stop their attack. This week, UTSA faces an even faster offense.

While Arizona will be much more run-oriented than what Oklahoma St displayed, the Wildcats make it a point to push tempo and take advantage of tired defenses.

For this reason, the pace of the UTSA offense will be critical. The Roadrunner attack must take time off of the clock and sustain long drives in order to keep that Arizona offense off the field and give their defense a chance to recover in between drives.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EARLY OPPORTUNITIES

Arizona could see attendance in the area of the 50,000 range. It will be the most hostile and energized environment UTSA will have played in.

In order to UTSA to stem the early emotion in the stadium, they must take advantage of early scoring opportunities.

In both games so far in 2013, the UTSA offense has missed out on some early scoring opportunities. These early scoring plays will be critical in determining the momentum and flow of the game.
