Young and Talented

The trend of focusing on local, up and coming talent has been a constant theme as of late for the basketball staff. It continues as this 2016 pg recently visited.

After an impressive summer on the AAU circuit, Ellis Jefferson (Brandeis HS) has started to receive attention from college programs. Rice, Tulsa and UTSA have all either been in contact or sent mail letting the sophomore know that they're watching.

Two weekends ago, the 6'0" 155lb point guard, took in a UTSA football game as an unofficial visitor and came away impressed.

"The coaching staff called my dad and arranged it. We didn't really go to campus, just the Alamodome. We got to see the football team warm up and we went onto the field. It was a good visit," said Jefferson.

Ellis doesn't start practicing with his high school team until October. In the meantime, he's still training and working to get better. He takes the reins of a Bronco program who was led by D1 signee Justin Graham.

"I'm kind of nervous, but I'm learning and doing everything to put my teammates in the best position around me. I'm trying to improve my left hand dribbling skills and my leadership," said Jefferson.

Some sophomores may have a limited scouting report, but there's no secret on what Jefferson can do already. He's known as a pg that can attack the lane, finish at the hoop or distribute. His mid range game is above average and he can step behind the arc.

The hometown 'Runners left a good impression on Jefferson and he's a little more familiar with the program than you might think.

"We played a couple of playoff games in the Convocation center. I also played on campus at the recreation center. It's a school I'm interested in and I'm thinking about them," said Jefferson.

It's still very early in the recruiting process, but it's never too early for the UTSA staff to work on recruiting the Alamo City's top talent, such as Jefferson. There hasn't been any detailed talk about an offer, but the 'Runners are seriously interested. Ellis also knows what he's looking for.

"I'm looking for academics and a program that wants to win a national championship. It would be nice to stay close to home, but I'm keeping my options open," said Jefferson.
