'Runners Win 2nd Straight
After a win Wednesday over an inferior opponent, it was going to be interesting to see how Brooks Thompson and his club responded to playing a team that had just beaten them at home by 15 points, two weeks ago. Senior leader Hyjii Thomas would lead the 'Runners in their response. He paced UTSA with a career high 24 pts in playing all 40 minutes. The game was tight at times, tied twice, but UTSA never trailed in the matchup. The 'Runners biggest lead was 12 points early on in the 1st half when they used a couple of 3-pointers from Thomas and PG Keon Lewis, who to open up some space at 21-9. Lewis finished with 20 points on the strength of going 12 of 12 from the free throw line. The lead wouldn't last as the Broncs would respond with a 7-0 run to get right back into the game. That would be the tempo the rest of the night. UTSA would surge forward a few points, the Broncs would chip away and hang tight. At the half, UTSA would only lead by four, 33-29. The 'Runners torched the nets shooting at a 60% clip, yet the Broncs were clearly in striking distance. In crunch time near the 3 minute mark, the Broncs caught fire using an 11-2 run to close the gap to two points. UTSA would answer. Keon Lewis would get the assist on a Phillip Jones throwdown and the team went 11 of 12 in the final 3 minutes from the free throw line to ice the game. For the second straight contest, RS Freshman Phillip Jones got the start as Sr Tyler Wood battles back spasms. The freshman did not disappoint, almost netting a double-double once more with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Another wrinkle into the starting line-up was that Brooks Thompson decided to go with 7-footer Kaj-Bjorn Sherman at the 5 spot and bring Edrico McGregor off the bench. This was the third straight start for Lewis who also had 5 assists to go with his 20pts. UTSA is now 3-6 overall and will get an 11 day break from game action because of finals. They'll return to the court for a 3 game homestand starting, Wednesday December 18th when they host CSU Bakersfield. Tip is set for 7 p.m. from the Convo.
