Recruiting Quick Hits (1.21.14)

After a weekend where the staff hosted 5 official visitors, UTSA cotinues to try and fill some remaining spots in the 2014 class and we have the latest.

Head Coach Larry Coker and his staff currently have 11 commits and have their eyes set on a handful of targets to close out this small class with a bang. Here is what we know.

The staff wants one fullback and will only take one. The other remaining spots are for (1) defensive end, (1) more offensive tackle and (1) more defensive back.

Early on the chatter was this class would be around 15 commitments. During the season we heard as low as 9 commits were being taken. Already past that point, realistically the count looks headed for 15 or more. Here's what we know on who the remaining targets are:

Daythan Davis & Daniel Gresham
Gresham is the newest UTSA target and is being recruited by O-line Coach Jim Marshall. He's the nation's #1 rated FB per our National Recruiting Analysts. Davis is a tremendous overall athlete who would also be a perfect fit in the UTSA system. Davis is set to visit UTSA on January 31st.

(Defensive End)

Xavier Washington & Cody Casey
The Cedar Hill HS DE has been playing it very close to the vest. Casey just took an official visit to UTSA and was impressed. He still remains committed to Texas State and has an official visit lined up for this weekend to San Marcos. In the end, that could give the Bobcats the edge they need to retain his commitment.

Alec Divalerio (Sachse HS) also visited UTSA this past weekend but came away without an offer. If neither Casey nor Washington pledge Orange and Blue. Next up would be prospects such as Divalerio, Dale Roberts, Tolen Avery, and John Franklin.

(Offensive Tackle)

Phillip Haynes
The staff is waiting on Phillip Haynes (Skyline HS) for a decision. If Haynes decides on going elsewhere, next in line could be J.C. Rast (SA Johnson). Both are in the mold of leaner, slender, more athletic offensive tackles who can get on the outside and bust their tail down-field.

(Defensive Back)

Stanley Dye Jr & Nate Gaines
Dye is set to visit on the weekend of the 31st. Gaines surprised RunnerNation with a visit to UTSA this past weekend. Early Tuesday morning, a source close to the Gaines situation said Gaines remained solid to SMU and was not going to flip. As we've all seen, recruiting changes by the minute so we'll see what happens with his decision set for Wednesday.

Willie Harvey (Menendez HS, FL.) is a name to keep an eye on. He does not have an offer from the staff, but was visited by UTSA Coaches last week while recruiting in Florida. He's being evaluated as a "Dawg" hybrid "Hawk" candidate.

The talk around bringing in a Juco QB has died down a bit. As we first reported the staff is evaluating QB prospects, but will only bring one if it's the perfect fit. "Grey Shirt" offers have also been extended to RB Xavier Turner and WR Brandon Colon. If things don't pan out down the stretch as Coach Coker would like, a slot could open up for a "grey shirt" to get a scholarship this class. Recommended Stories
