Recruiting Class Down To Eight

Recruiting Class Down To Eight

UTSA's 2014 recruiting class stands at eight. With National Signing Day around the corner, how will this class finish?

In the span of just four days, UTSA lost three verbal commits to the 2014 recruiting class.

It began on Wednesday evening as three-star Safety Travin Howard from Longview switched his commitment from UTSA to TCU. Howard's reversal came as somewhat a surprise as he had been a solid commit to UTSA during this recruiting cylce.

On Saturday afternoon, CB Anthoula Kelly from Galena Park switched his commitment from UTSA to Fresno State. Kelly had recently visited Fresno St but spent the week trying to decide which program was best for him.

And then on Sunday evening following his official visit to UTSA, WR John Neph elected to de-commit from UTSA to take a preferred walk on position at Oklahoma State. Neph visited OSU prior to his visit at UTSA.

"The UTSA program is extremely impressive," said Neph. "I just feel it would be something I'd regret if I didn't give it a shot at OSU."

The current number of commits stands at eight. Here is a list:

QB Blake Bogenschutz
DT Kevin Strong
TE Cameron Oliver
OT David Anzaldua
S Jared McGee
WR Kerry Thomas
WR Greg Campbell
LB Justin Todd

Of the eight current commits, WR Kerry Thomas remains is said to be the only "soft commit" of the group as he is scheduled to visit Fresno St this weekend. The other commits have indicated they are strong verbals to UTSA.

With National Signing Day just over one week away, UTSA will be very active this week to try to replace the de-commits. Additionally, staff will try to close on several targets who are strongly considering the Roadrunners.

Note: While National Signing Day is on Wednesday, Feb 5, the open/contact period for recruiting ends on Saturday, Feb 1. Needless to say, this week will be very important in how the 2014 recruiting class is built. Recommended Stories
