Practice Report 8.12.14

Week 2 brings some bumps and bruises as over a dozen players miss practice with various knicks and bumps. Here is your practice report.

A warm muggy day on campus turned cool in just under an hour as lightening and torrential rains shortened UTSA's fall practice on Tuesday evening.

Having been relatively healthy for the first week and half of fall camp, the injury bug has hit the 'Runners. Nevertheless, they continued to work to prepare for Houston.

-- QB Tucker Carter now appears to be the vocal leader of the offense. In drills, Carter was in full control of the huddle and got the offense going at the pace that Offensive Coordinator Kevin Brown likes. When the pace slowed, Carter got in the huddle and fired players up.

-- The offense ran various jet sweep formations in drills today. At least five different formations were used.

-- RB Tyrell Clay, a redshirt freshman from Corpus Christi, has apparently impressed in practices. He saw some reps with the second team and really looked the part.

-- Little used TE's Trevor Stevens and Cade Laufer saw some action today. Both look the part of a quality Division 1 tight end.

-- LB Blake Terry had an impressive stint in coverage drills. The past few seasons, Terry has looked shaky in coverage, he is certainly working to improve that in his final season.

-- The entire Hard Hat Defense ran through various drills. Can't really say there was a tons of standouts. Triston Wade and Richard Burge looked very good today.

-- The following players missed practiced with some type of injury. Many are described as day-to-day: DE Robert Singletary, S Nic Johnston, OL Josh Walker, DE Codie Brooks, S Michael Egwuagu, S Joseph Lizcano, S Chase Dahlquist, TE Cole Hubble, RB Treston Coleman, and OL Cody Cole.

--The following players are expected to miss an extended period of time: OL David Anzaldua, RB Brian Vaughn, and RB Jalen Rhodes.

-- Head Coach Larry Coker described the team as being relatively healthy and said that none of the injuries were serious in nature.

-- Offensive Coordinator Kevin Brown said that he was pleased with the offense's growth in this camp but that the unit is not ready for the seaosn just yet. He expects the offense to become better in the coming weeks.

-- Brown mentioned that he is very pleased with the performance of all three QBs (Tucker Carter, Austin Robinson, and Blake Bogenschutz) and that he getting all three ready to play this season.

--We interviewed Head Coach Larry Coker, Offensive Coordinator Kevin Brown, QB Tucker Carter, RB Jarveon Williams, CB Fred Blow, and RB Nate Shaw.
