Practice Report 8.14.14

Nearly two dozen players sit out at the midway point of fall camp. Even with that, Head Coach Larry Coker called Thursday one of their better fall practices. Here is your practice report.

A total of 20 players either missed or were limited in workouts tonight as UTSA passed the midway point of fall camp.

-- The offense looked crisp in endzone drills. The team ran what appeared to be various new formations. To no one's surprise, the offense was most crisp under starting QB Tucker Carter, who got things moving very quickly.

-- Second string QB Austin Robinson was also very quick getting in and out of the huddle on the goal line.

-- In endzone fade drills, it appears that Carter has built up a good rapport with many of the WRs as he was able to connect on seemingly every throw. These were fade routes. Somewhat surprising what backup Austin Robinson, who throws a food fade ball.

-- We continue to see TE David Morgan in various formations. Especially in goal line formations, it's clear the offense will try to use him more to try to get the defense in mis-match situations. On one play, Morgan caught a TD pass on a simple hitch route at the goal line that appears to be very difficult to stop.

-- Safeties Duke Wheeler and Mauricio Sanchez earned the praise of Defensive Coordinator Neal Neathery following practice. Neathery says he considers the rover position very deep and that several players at that position are having good falls.

-- Despite being sidelined by injury, LB Blake Terry was very involved in practice being a field-general type of player helping some of the other linebackers in drills.

-- Filling in for injured OT Josh Walker, Jordan Gray looked very comfortable with the first team in goal line drills. He earned praise from Coach Coker.

-- DE Robert Singletary, who was not dressed in full pads recovering from injury, did participate in drills. Singletary was at full speed and looked like he was pushing himself a little extra hard today. He looked very good going through the various drills the defense does as a warm up.

-- Despite a number of players down, the overall mood of the practice was relatively upbeat. Several players not practicing left the field with training staff to get treatment while others were very much engaged.

-- We interviewed Head Coach Larry Coker, Defensive Coordinator Neal Neathery, and WR Seth Grubb.

-- The following players were not in pads and did not practice: C Juan Perez, DT Anthony Lee, DT Kevin Strong, LB Justin Todd, DE Codie Brooks, S Chase Dahlquist, S Joseph Lizcano, LB Blake Terry, OT Josh Walker, OG Cody Cole, S Nic Johnston, and TE Cole Hubble.

-- The following players were in pads but had limited contact: WR Kenny Bias, RB Treston Coleman, and RB Brandon Armstrong.

-- Backup QB Blake Bogenschutz his left calve taped up but was not limited in any way.

-- S Michael Egwuagu returned from injury and fully participated in practice.

-- The following players are expected to miss an extended period of time: OL David Anzaldua, RB Brian Vaughn, and RB Jalen Rhodes.

-- The next media availability is next Tuesday.
