FIU Outlasts UTSA, 80-72

Florida International rolled into San Antonio on Thursday evening for a Conference USA showdown with the ‘Runners.

Untimely UTSA turnovers combined with hot Florida International shooting led to an 80-72 loss on Thursday night a the Convocation Center.

The ‘Runners entered the night with three big men battling injuries: Tyler Wood did not suit up and play while Edrico McGregor and Kaj Bjorn Sherman both battled injuries that saw them each sit out significant portions of the game.

Despite missing a majority of the second half, McGregor led all scorers with a career high 16 points.

Two other ‘Runners scored in double figures (Devon Agusi 13 points and Keon Lewis 12 points).

UTSA had eight turnovers in the first half and 12 for the game. The lead ballooned to as many as 18 points midway through the second half, but UTSA fought back to make the game close down the stretch.

UTSA closed the first half on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 6 and could have cut the lead to 4 points but FIU stemmed the tide. That was the closest UTSA would get.

UTSA shot just 36% from the field in the second half and 39% for the game. Meanwhile, FIU picked things up shooting 52% in the second half and 48% for the game.

POST GAME QUOTES

Head Coach Brooks Thompson

"We've been banged up pretty good all year long but we can't use that as an excuse. I thought this was a game we should have won. You can't make excuses for it."

"We have some uncharacteristic turnovers. We were just impatient, just making unforced turnovers."

UTSA will next host Florida Atlantic on Saturday at 3pm.
